One Year Later :

The State of Mental Health in Tohoku, Japan;

United Students for Disaster Relief / Recovery

Wednesday, April 4th, 6pm-8:30pm

The Cowin Center, Teachers College

To commemorate the one year mark of the March 2011 disaster in Japan, Consortium for Japan Relief is hosting an academic symposium with a series of world renowned speakers who will focus on mental health. Recovery in Tohoku, Japan is an ongoing process and some of the most significant issues still plaguing the area are the psychological state of the victims of the disaster and the evolving methods of care available to them. Subjects addressed in the symposium range from different types of treatment of disaster related mental health needs to on-the-ground reports on those receiving such care. There will also be a presentation by United Students for Disaster Relief/Recovery on their disaster relief/recovery wiki that provides ready-to-use information in case of an overseas natural disaster.

Team Rainbows & Unicorns took part in the Tri-State Tough Mudder this past Sunday where they swam icy rivers and climbed mountains of mud for over 12 miles! The team also raised funds for the Japanese student organization, Youth for 311, who are doing some amazing work by mobilizing students to get involved with reconstruction efforts. Congratulations to the team and all their efforts!

The earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear catastrophes have been of an unimaginable scale. They have had profound social, economic, health, and political ramifications for Japan, its people, and the international community. Post-disaster needs and responses as well as the on-going nuclear situation continue to be significant issues of concern. To mark the six-month anniversary of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, CJR is hosting a symposium that will feature a multidisciplinary panel composed of renowned Columbia experts on radiation, disaster preparedness, economics, politics, mental health and complicated grief. The symposium is entitled: ‘Dealing with Disaster: Caring for Japan Post 3-11.’

Our request is that panelists’ presentations pay particular attention and reflect specific sensitivity to the human dimensions of disaster and its aftermath. Clear analyses or recommendations regarding what is essential to know during the ‘survival phase’ and the under-publicized ‘returning to daily life’ and ‘recovery’ phases and that may be related to the human experience are of great interest. While the symposium pivots around the Japan disaster, we would also welcome your insights into the lessons that can be learned by the global community from what has transpired and continues to occur in Japan. How might we better prepare to respond to international crises as global citizens in the future? What is the responsibility of the global community and what is the individual responsibility of the global citizen? How can we be of greatest assistance to Japan and its people and, by example, to the rest of the world community?
