Soon after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011, many concerned Columbia University students and faculty members gathered together and formed CJR, a united coalition organized by Dr. Shunichi Homma, Margaret Milliken Hatch Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief of Cardiology at Columbia University Medical Center, and Dr. Jeanette Takamura, Dean of the Columbia University School of Social Work, along with alumni and student coordinators, Emily Kidder, Daiyu Suzuki and Kirsten Homma, and core members, Professors Hugh Patrick, Gerry Curtis, Paul Anderer, and Dr. Kato and Dr. Robert Yanagisawa and others.

CJR’s mission is tri-fold:
– To increase the Columbia community’s awareness of the effects of the Japan quake, the tsunami, the resulting aftershocks, and the on-going nuclear crisis and their implications for all;
– To draw upon the expertise and strength of Columbia’s faculty to generate evidence-based information and guidance about the Japan disaster and its aftermath and about comparable natural disasters; and
– To encourage continuing assistance to the affected regions as appropriate and in collaboration and coordination with other organizations
